He followed with the Shine A Light solo concert tour at Seoul's Olympic Park on December 5 and 6. The edgy idol put on an amazing performance that courted fervent cheers as well as headline-splashing controversy because of the implied sexuality and violence in parts of the show. To cater to audiences of different ages, the Shine A Light concert is being released on DVD in two versions. The Uncut Version of the concert is suitable for audiences age 15 and older.
G-Dragon performed all the songs from his album including hits Heartbreaker, Breathe, and Butterfly, as well as his previous solo number This love. Big Bang's Big Show 2009 opens not just with a bang, but with... opera?! A majestic intro of violins and operatic singing lays the carpet for Big Bang's grand entry. Dressed in dapper white, the guys kick off with their hit Haru Haru to orchestral accompaniment, followed by My Heaven. The energy level remains high for the entire concert as the group dance and groove through hit songs like Always, Lies, Stylish, Red Sunset and LaLaLa, as well as side tracks that they don't often perform live like Wonderful and A Nice Person. The stage and lighting design are pretty impressive, what with the crazy lasers, fireworks, fire, and light-up walkway stage that snakes among the audience. But the biggest draw is, of course, the guys.
The most interesting parts of the concert are probably the solo stages, especially since the members' individual performances are so different. The baby of the group, Seung Ri, makes the boldest move of the night as he spices up his solo single Strong Baby with a sexy dance routine, and an intro video that shows him lightly kissing a lucky lady. Not as daring as T.O.P and Lee Hyori's escapade at the 2008 MKMF, but more than enough to get the fans squealing.
Tae Yang literally drops from the sky as he plays the piano to R&B ballad Look at Me on a platform slowly lowered from the rafter. Once on land, he quickens the tempo, sliding onto the top of the piano and dancing around the stage, not to mention taking off his shirt. Clearly, the man understands fan service. Channeling an old-time matinee idol vibe in a trenchcoat and black suit with slicked-down hair, T.O.P takes a more dramatic approach with a breakup in the rain video intro and his husky solo Like Nothing Happened. Do-all leader G-Dragon puts on his own DJ show on top of the singing and dancing, and Dae Sung makes everyone smile with his trot number Big Hit, complete with a silly plastic thumb cover for a giant thumb-up.
In between the slick performances, the guys show their fun and dorky sides as they joke around and try to find a girlfriend from the audience. To get the full impact of their wonderful dorkiness though you have to go to Special Features Disc 2 which includes a fabulous amusement park special. They put on colorful ski masks and act like raucous kids as they try to complete different missions without revealing their identities. Equally priceless is their hilarious Beethoven Virus parody, "Big Bang Virus". T.O.P puts his deep voice to good use in the Kim Myung Min maestro role, only he's trying to form a dance team not an orchestra. A gender-bending, tutu-wearing Seung Ri looks too pretty for his own good as the female lead Dorumi, while Dae Sung achieves the opposite effect as a goofy cleaning lady with goofier dance moves. Tae Yang also hams it up as an auditioning dancer, and G-Dragon manages to keep a straight face in the Jang Geun Suk romantic rival role.
After the clunky plastic books and colorful styrofoam strangeness of Big Bang's previous concert releases, Big Show actually gets packaging that makes sense and looks nice. The three DVDs come in a digipack packaged in a handsome black box with a nifty Big Bang diorama on the cover. The 130-page photobook has glossy concert stills and many cute backstage, rehearsal, and amusement park pictures. Plus, the English photo captions are hilarious. Sample: "He is winking at all the girls. But he gave me a significant wink in this time." Yes, I'm sure he did.
